info about richie herbst:
Richard “Richie” Herbst (born 1976, Austria) is a Graz-based sound artist working in the fields of experimental music, improvisation, and sonic environments. His work explores the creation of dense, spatial soundscapes using synthesizers, effects, and field recordings, with a focus on noise, texture, and unstable sonic environments.

In addition to his solo work, he is an active member of several collaborative projects, including ASTRO BLACK (with Michael Masen), GRAPHIT (with Klaus Wohlgemuth and Martin Pfeiffer), MRM Trio (with Marina Džukljev and Miodrag Gladović), MULM (with Sara Zlanabitnig and Stephan Roiss), RHY (with Yvonne Hofmeister and Harald Hofmeister), and Regolith (with Christian Zollner).

Regular collaborations with artists from the fields of experimental music and free improvisation, including: Georg Wissa, Max Winter, Alexandra Steßl, Linda Sharrock, Mario Rechtern, Michael Prehofer, Seijiro Murayama, Leszek, Yuri Landman, Michl Laab, Jukka Kääriäinen, Markus Krispel, Irene Kepl, Gigi Gratt, Rudi Fischerlehner, Michael Eisl, Vid Drašler, Angélica Castelló

In 2019 he initiated the Bordone Ensemble, an open improvisation group with a fluid line-up, focusing on drone, noise, and ambient music. Beyond fixed projects, Herbst is regularly involved in collaborative improvisation settings with a wide range of artists.

He is an active part of the free improvisation scene in Graz and Bistrica ob Sotli, performing in ensembles such as the Styrian Improvisers Orchestra (STIO) and the GIS Orchestra (Schl8hof Wels), and contributing to ongoing formats such as the Monday improvisation series Impro im Kotter.

In 2001 he co-founded Interstellar Records, an experimental label dedicated to noise and exploratory sound practices. Alongside his artistic work, he curates and organizes concerts, most recently the series Soundscapes in Graz, and contributes articles and reviews to Freistil Magazin. He is a member of the klingt.org collective.

His work focuses on unstable sonic states, where sound shifts between tone, texture, and noise. He uses synthesizers and field recordings as interconnected sources rather than separate elements. Improvisation plays a central role and is understood as an open process shaped by interaction, feedback, and chance. Recurring aspects of his work include low-frequency drones, slow modulation, and sound structures that move between organic and electronic perception.
